Riding Policy

We are looking forward to sharing the magic of our riding safari with you, as we venture across Kenya’s wilderness on horseback. May we kindly request that you complete and acknowledge the following, so that we may gladly accept your booking. Please familiarise yourself with the details of our riding policy below before processing your safari reservation:

  • You are required to complete one of the following levels of competence;
    • Intermediate Plus: confident, well balanced in the saddle, able to control a forward going horse at a steady canter over uneven ground in a group situation; and have been riding for a number of years.
    • Advanced: a frequent and regular rider, confident outdoors on almost any horse that is forward going at all paces over rough and variable ground; and have owned your own horse, hunted seriously and been consistently riding for many years.
  • As we ride between 4 - 6 hours a day, covering 20 - 30 kms, you will need to be; riding fit, post to the trot and be able to control your horse at the canter or gallop (out of trouble!). If you do not ride regularly, (i.e. 2 - 3 times a week), we strongly recommend that you do so before joining the safari. Regrettably we are unable to accept novice, beginner or intermediate riders.
  • The maximum weight limit is 90 kgs (200 lbs or 14 st). Heavier riders may be accommodated, subject to horse availability and prior arrangement. A special programme can be offered that includes an additional horse (at extra cost), shorter rides, game drives, walks and cultural visits. For the horses' sake, please be accurate about your riding ability, weight and fitness level.
  • We reserve the right to prevent anyone from riding if we feel they do not fulfil the minimum competence level as indicated, or if weight and fitness levels do not fall within that recommended. Refunds are not given under such circumstances.
  • It is strongly recommended that you wear a fitted and secure riding helmet when in close proximity to horses and at all times when riding. You are responsible for supplying your own riding helmet.
    • Please ensure you are familiar with the stipulations of your medical insurance policy, as many companies will only insure you if wearing a safety helmet. We will not accept any liability whatsoever for head injuries sustained as a result of ignoring this advice.
    • Please ensure your travel and medical insurance policy covers you for horse riding and includes emergency evacuation and medical repatriation.Please note that you will be liable for any medical fees and any further expenses incurred in case of an emergency. Medical treatment is typically on pre-payment, so do inform your credit card company of your travel plans.
  • By sending a deposit towards your safari now and by signing our indemnity document prior to safari start, you understand the risks of being around, and riding horses (horses can be unpredictable, bad tempered and potentially dangerous - jump, buck, bite, kick, rear, stumble, and fall etc); and furthermore, understand the risk of being in remote wilderness areas where dangerous game occurs.
  • My current weight is ..…... kgs.
  • I am confident riding at all paces (walk/trot/canter) on open and uneven terrain with a forward going horse.
  • I am fit enough to ride between 4 - 6 hours per day and trot and canter for at least 5 minutes at a time.

Prior to your ride, we will require you to fill out an online riding form to confirm your riding experience, abilities and preferences.
